Haven 20x16 oil and cold wax on cradled panel. Framed. In pre-reservation Native North America the size of residential social units frequently
varied widely according to the season. Among nomadic hunting groups, the smallest level of social organization – the extended family or
band – was the residential unit throughout much of the year, while among semisedentary groups whose economy was based on horticulture
the pueblo was the residential unit during a significant period of the year and provided a geographical locus for the social group. (DeMallie)
Shared purpose, shared rites and rituals, and security are suggested as reasons for small yet fluid communities. Historically, Ancestral
Puebloans moved, generally, as groups according to land fertility, water and safety, at times abandoning one site only to have a later
generation return to it.
